On-Board Dyno
With the On-Board Dyno it is now possible to determine actual engine power in a moving vehicle. The instrument is installed directly in the vehicle allowing measurements of up to 2000 kW and 600 km/h (or 2000 HP and 600 MPH) while driving under real-world and track conditions.
Unlike conventional dynamometers and rolling roads, the On-Board Dyno relies on the power absorbing inertia and drag of the vehicle and power is determined based on acceleration and speed. As such, the instrument is also capable of measuring acceleration, speed and the aerodynamic and frictional drag characteristics of the vehicle. Negative values that are the result of braking, engine and drive train friction can also be determined.
Real-time readout of the measurements
is provided by both analog and digital displays. The analog display provided fast response
for racing and competition applications while the digital display provides high resolution
for precision measurements.
The peak values of power, acceleration and speed are stored in memory and may be recalled at any time. The On-Board Dyno measures all of the above parameters continuously and their values may be recorded by a computer or data recorder.
The On-Board Dyno is not only capable of measuring exactly actual engine performance and other parameters, it can also easily detect changes due to variations of engine tuning and condition, clutch slip, tyre inflation, sized brakes, spoiler/wing alignment etc. Recorded data clearly shows the effects of flat spots in response, turbo lag, delay between shifts, lightweight engine and drive train components or any other condition that affects the engine or vehicular performance.
The installation and calibration ist straightforward and uncomplicated. Once installed, the On-Board Dyno is ready for action on the road and track that were previously restricted to vehicle manufacturers or well-equipped testing laboratories.
